Madison Superintendent Joe Gothard highlighted recent improvements in literacy in district schools. But he pointed out that proficiency rates still hovered around just 40% at the elementary, middle and high schools he listed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should not be sitting in a place where we can say 60% of our students are not proficient at their grade level in reading,\u201d Rebecca Kundert, the district\u2019s senior executive director of curriculum and instruction, said in follow-up remarks.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your browser does not support the video tag.
