{"id":102,"date":"2026-05-14T02:00:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-14T02:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sedso.io\/blog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2026-05-14T02:12:05","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T02:12:05","slug":"over-50-of-early-childhood-students-literacy-proficient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sedso.io\/blog\/2026\/05\/14\/over-50-of-early-childhood-students-literacy-proficient\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Over 50% of early childhood students literacy proficient&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wdtimes-wi.newsmemory.com\/?publink=23b21dfb3_13520c5\">Samantha Erstad<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Director of Teaching and Learning Katie Grundahl presented findings from early childhood literacy screening data for 4K through 3rd grade students to the School District of Jefferson Board of Education.<\/p>\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolinfosystem.org\/pdf\/2026\/05\/jefferson_early_literacy_5_2026.jpg\" width=\"90%\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the required assessment by the state of Wisconsin under Act 20,\u201d Grundahl said. \u201cYou\u2019ll see all the different assessments in the grade levels (and) the amount of time it takes to administer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing that\u2019s really important for everybody to understand when they\u2019re looking at last year\u2019s early literacy screening data to this year\u2019s early screening data is they updated the norms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Due to the changes, Grundhal wanted to take more time to explain to the Board how the differing standards are interpreted.<\/p>\n<p>One graphic depicted the early literacy scores for a combination of kindergarten and first graders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll see a higher score in spring or in fall, like we predicted would happen,\u201d Grundhal said. \u201cIt fell in winter, and then we threw it back in. Right now, we\u2019re sitting at 55% of students who are proficient&#8230;Not proficient, they\u2019re above the 25th percentile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To continue to work with students, letters are sent home to encourage parents to send their children to summer school.
